The residents of Southern Savo have mainly earned their living from the earth and forests like people did elsewhere in Finland, too. Agriculture in the area has developed from the slash-and-burn technique traditionally used to the intensive farming of the EU period, although organic farming and cattle farming are increasingly gaining in popularity. The classical element of earth also represents the industry tied to wood and water that has arisen and the development of ground transport.
