Mikkeli Art Museum was opened in 1970 as the Johannes Haapasalo Museum. The name was changed to the Mikkeli Art Museum in 1976, following the donation of the Martti Airio collection to the museum. The art museum was named the South Savo Regional Art Museum in 1981.

Mikkeli Art Museum provides a wide range of services connected with the visual arts in South Savo. It researches, documents and displays art from the region. The museum arranges 5-6 changing exhibitions every year. In addition to organising exhibitions, the art museum also looks after and adds to the art collections in its possession, and one important objective is to collect and display Finnish illustration art. The art museum also offers an interactive and experiential learning environment for various workshops and art education projects.

The Martti Airio (1890-1973) collection, which is on permanent display, comprises Finnish paintings and graphic art from the 1870's to the 1980s. Most of the works are post-Impressionist and Expressionist. Sculptures from the collection of the sculptor Johannes Haapasalo (1880-1965) are also on permanent display. The works in the city's art collection have been placed in the city offices.
